Edsel Ford High School Football Set to Face Garden City in August 2026 Season Opener

Dearborn families, students, and alumni can circle Thursday, Aug. 27: Edsel Ford High School will open its 2026 varsity football season against Garden City High School in Garden City, Michigan. The non-league matchup gives the community its first look at this year's Thunderbirds before Downriver League play begins.

That first look comes with Edsel Ford seeking signs of progress after two brutal seasons. The Thunderbirds finished 0-9 in 2025 after going 1-8 in 2024, when their only victory was a 28-27 win over Roosevelt on September 13, 2024. The 2025 season included lopsided losses to Carlson, 0-68; Trenton, 0-63; Woodhaven, 7-63; Allen Park, 0-51; Lincoln Park, 0-42; and Roosevelt, 8-42.

Garden City should provide a realistic early benchmark. The Cougars, who compete in the Western Wayne Athletic Conference, finished 4-5 overall and 2-5 in league play in 2025 after posting a 6-4 record in 2024. Garden City also defeated Edsel Ford 21-14 in their August 2025 matchup. That recent history points to a competitive mid-tier opponent — neither a guaranteed win nor an overwhelming challenge — and the opener should offer an early measure of whether the Thunderbirds can close the gap from last year's seven-point loss.

Opening against a non-league opponent also allows Edsel Ford to test personnel and schemes before facing the Downriver League schedule, where blowout losses have defined the last two years.
